The Hunley

The Hunley
Before you read this, think what do you think it would be like to be on one of the world’s first submarines? Just think, now you can read this from a real soldier. Hi, I’m a soldier named Kirie Ervan, and I was on one of the first submarines called the Hunley.  Now let me tell you the story.  It’s July 1863 and the Union blockade of Charleston had gone on for almost four years. The South looked for ways to end the blockade.  People hoped a secret weapon would help to end the blockade.  One day, a strange-looking ship arrived in Charleston.  The ship was a long thin tube with room inside for nine men.  To make the Hunley work, one man guided the ship and the other men turned a crank.  However, things didn’t go so well when we fired from our submarine.  The Hunley sank.  The crew was trapped inside, and all of us died inside.  Do you think you would survive if this happened today?
