The Blockade of Charleston, a battle in the Civil War
“What was the Blockade of Charleston? The Blockade of Charleston was a big part of the Civil War. Why would the Blockade of Charleston be a big part of the Civil War? During the blockade, Charleston could not get supplies in or out of Charleston. However, everyone in Charleston had been able to live on what they had before the town was completely surrounded. It was a shocking and and extremely fierce battle. I only had enough for my children and I. My husband was a soldier in a militia for the confederacy and was fighting in the battle at the time. I had so many cartons of soup, blocks of cheese, and tea bags to last me through the forty-two days that I spent trapped in Charleston, gazing at the harbor through a window in my house. By noon, they had almost blockaded the entire coast. The ships had blocked out almost the entire coast, just so my dearly important hometown of Charleston couldn’t get out. Later the town was forced to surrender. It felt good to be able to see a returning battle ship carrying my husband. But then again yet the Union had still won the incredibly enforced and yet still quite unexpected battle.”
