Do you know who Robert Smalls is and what I did?
I am Robert Smalls I am a gunboat pilot. My owner rented me a captain to teach me important things about sailing ships. At night time, when my captain was away, I sailed the Planter away from land. My plan was to sail out of the Charleston Harbor to get my freedom. My wife, kids, and the black crew members were with me on the trip. It was not easy escaping because I had to pass by guns at the Confederate forts. It was so scary, but I tricked them to think I was a real captain. When I passed Fort Sumter, I directed the ship toward the Union ships. I sailed to the edge of the Harbor ,I lowered the Confederate flag, and raised a white flag. That meant I am surrendering the gunboat to the Union. I am so happy that I have led my family to freedom. Would you go out in the night to go put the flag up? Why or why not???
