The Blockade of Charleston

The Blockade of Charleston, a battle in the Civil War

“What was the Blockade of Charleston? The Blockade of Charleston was a big part of the Civil War. Why would the Blockade of Charleston be a big part of the Civil War? During the blockade, Charleston could not get supplies in or out of Charleston. However, everyone in Charleston had been able to live on what they had before the town was completely surrounded. It was a shocking and and extremely fierce battle. I only had enough for my children and I. My husband was a soldier in a militia for the confederacy and was fighting in the battle at the time. I had so many cartons of soup, blocks of cheese, and tea bags to last me through the forty-two days that I spent trapped in Charleston, gazing at the harbor through a window in my house. By noon, they had almost blockaded the entire coast. The ships had blocked out almost the entire coast, just so my dearly important hometown of Charleston couldn’t get out. Later the town was forced to surrender. It felt good to be able to see a returning  battle ship carrying my husband. But then again yet the Union had still won the incredibly enforced and yet still quite unexpected battle.”

Life of a Civil War Soldier

Life of a Civil War Soldier
I stay in a camp in a tent with other soldiers. The food is bad. And it does not taste good. We moved from place to place to hide from the other soldiers. We fought our own families too. I took my time to play games. I felt scared because I saw a lot of dead and wounded people.  The worst thing about being a Civil War soldier is being in war. How would you have liked to be a Civil War soldier?

Could you imagine your whole town being blockaded by ships?

Well, I am so hungry and sad. My dad can’t go to work, and my mom can’t cook or clean. I can’t go to school. I feel sad because I feel like I’m being blocked out of the world. I can’t get food or water, and I’m stuck eating bits of food every time I eat. Trust me, it is nasty. I wonder if my family and I  will ever be able to get the stuff that we need?

The Harsh Life of a Civil War Soldier

Life of a Civil War soldier

Have you ever wondered about the life of a soldier in the Civil War by the point of view of a Civil War soldier?

My name is Jake Brosowski and I’m 22 years old. I am one of the frontline soldiers in my troop.  The Civil War is a horrible war that I am fighting in because a lot of people died. Many friends and family died, so the soldiers are sad and homesick. Well, Robert E. Lee or General Lee tried to take over and break the Union line over and over again. He failed, so the South’s last major invasion of the North was defeated.  About 50,000 of our soldiers died at that bloody battle of Gettysburg. The destruction of the Civil War was the worst part of the war because people got injured.  Also,  many people had to flee their homes because the war forced them to do so. I am hoping I don’t get wounded because I’m on the frontlines. Today, I tried to take my mind off of the dead soldiers and war by playing a game of cards with my fellow soldiers.  We actually do things like that around here right now such as play cards, musical instruments, hunting, or reading a book. Something hardly worth eating is hardtack and it taste horrible but it’s are closest thing to actual food. A lot of our soldiers died from the harsh elements of trips. Also a lot of men are starting to die of the weather. When it’s cold some of us die of hypothermia and some of us die of fevers. When it’s hot, many of us even die of heat strokes.  we had to take and still a lot of are soldiers died on the battlefield and places like Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie. If we don’t know who’s the South and who’s the North we remember that the South which is us have grey suits and the North have blue suits.

This picture shows us fighting the North and I told you thousands of people died in the Civil War and a lot of us are still dying because the war is still going on.

So what have you learned about the Civil War and Civil War soldiers?Civil War, Battle, America,

Life of a Civil War Soldier
Hello my name is Kevin Hart, and I am 31 years old. I was forced to join the Civil War when I was drafted. When you are in the Civil War, the only things we did was we hunted, read books, and played cards. There really isn’t anything to eat. The only thing we eat are these crackers, and they taste like stale crackers. They are disgusting!  As a Civil War soldier, we had to move around alot. It was very hard moving around from camp to camp. Under these conditions, would you join the Civil War or not?

Have You Ever Imagined How Life Was as a Civil War Soldier?

I wore a forage cap made from dark blue wool and a long wool dress coat. However,  we preferred to wear more comfortable sack coats, light blue pants, a dark wool shirt, socks, long underwear, and tough leather shoes. Buttons had an eagle stamped on them.  The clothes were not even the worst part!  The worst part was that I was forced to join the war because I was drafted. Being a soldier in the Civil War was not easy at all! We had to fight in battles, but many of the soldiers spent time in camp when we weren’t fighting.  We played games like cards and basketball. Other soldiers played musical instruments like fiddles and flutes. We carried our rifles and cartridges everywhere we went.  We also carried food, water, and a bedroll tent. Other soldiers carried books, paper, and playing cards. Being a soldier could be miserable. It was so HOT and walking through sticky mud with a hot uniform on and a heavy pack on your back was not fun! The bugs around you while you sleep was not a good thing. We also had to march all day! The winter was so COLD! It was rainy and sometimes snowy. Some soldiers slept together to keep them warmer. Other soldiers got very sick and died, but more died from wounds on the battlefield. Luckily, I survived! I did get a sickness, but I got better soon after. How do you think you would have done if you were a Civil War soldier?

The Secrets of a Civil War Submarine

The Secrets of a Civil War Submarine

How do you think the crew reacts to the Hunley in the Civil War?...

It was a dark and stormy night in the Charleston Harbor. In the evening we were going to attack the Union ships. My name is George Dixon. I was sitting behind Steven Harper. We played cards and slept in some. Finally  evening came and it was 4:30 P.M.We were excited and scared at the same time. We were aboard the Hunley when we spotted the the Union ships and we attacked! In the missile launcher was a very, very big missile. We locked the target and BOOM!!! We hit the Union ship and we turned around as quick as we could! But we started to worry thinking, what’s happened to the Hunley we were sinking! Sadly there was no escape. The Hunley was the first ever submarine to sink! To be on the Hunley I had to use lots of Effort, Courage, and patience.

Would you want to be a crew member on the Hunley and save the Charleston Harbor? Why or why not?

The Surprise  Hunley
How did we succeed in our attack on the blockade?
It was cramped, cold,  and  dark  on the Hunley.  My name is Alex Hunley and I was  second to last on the Hunley in front of  George Dixon.  We’re about to battle the blockade with with a  bomb  attack.   We  got close to a Union ship, then  the sailors pushed the bomb into the enemy ship.  The men steered the ship away.   Boom!!!!!!  The bomb exploded.  After we sunk the Union ship, the Hunley started sinking!  There was no escape out, and we were all very scared. How do we get out of  this cramped submarine?!!  Do you think we will ever make it out alive before it’s too late?

The Secres of The Hunley Civil War Ship

The Secrets of the Hunley Civil War Ship
What do you think of a submarine. The Hunley looked huge. The Hunley sank the first time when the wake of a passing ship swamped the ship. The Hunley blew up a ship with a bomb, it sank right after the explosion. It was the first submarine built. The Hunley could not be brought back up because it sunk too deep down. I was scared to get on the Hunley. The Hunley was so small that no one could walk around. When we shot the bomb, I was so excited. Then, I took a deep breath because  I knew that it was the last day of my life. The Hunley had sank I was dead. Do you think the Hunley should have been better and more tested?

The Life of a Civil War Soldier!

The Life of a Civil War soldier
Have you ever wondered what the life of a Civil War soldier was like?  My life of a Civil War soldier is very hard and boring I have to march to camp to camp and camp life is boring I didn’t get to see any action for nearly a year my feet skin peeled off like the layers of an onion from walking. I entertain myself  by  playing cards, baseball, reading books, and hunting. When I am walking I have to carry a lot of stuff I usually just carry a rifle and cartridges. Cartridges are made of paper and had bullets and gunpowder in them.  My life is miserable I have to walk threw sticky mud carrying a heavy backpack I get bit up by flies and mosquitoes. It got very hot in the  Summer and I wore heavy uniforms. In the Winter it is very cold and rainy and sometimes snows. It gets so cold that I have to tie to tents together and sleep with a fellow soldier this keeps me warm. A Lot of soldiers  died from sickness. More soldiers died from sickness then being wounded on the battlefield.I might not survive but I hope I win the War!  Do you think I will win the war?

Blockade of Charleston Harbor

The Blockade of Charleston Harbor
What happened with the Blockade of Charleston Harbor? The people of
Charleston had to last 42 days without getting supplies in or out. When they did this, I literally had my slaves pick some  rice, indigo, and cotton to sell so that I can make some money for my plantation. After 42 days, the people of Charleston couldn’t take it any more and the Union had won. Then after 42 days of not getting supplies in or out they once again can get supplies once the blockade ended.  We just started selling and sales are up. We are making great progress now that the blockade of Charleston Harbor is over. Maybe you can write back for what you could have done?

    The Hunley

    The Hunley
Before you read this, think what do you think it would be like to be on one of the world’s first submarines? Just think, now you can read this from a real soldier. Hi, I’m a soldier named Kirie Ervan, and I was on one of the first submarines called the Hunley.  Now let me tell you the story.  It’s July 1863 and the Union blockade of Charleston had gone on for almost four years. The South looked for ways to end the blockade.  People hoped a secret weapon would help to end the blockade.  One day, a strange-looking ship arrived in Charleston.  The ship was a long thin tube with room inside for nine men.  To make the Hunley work, one man guided the ship and the other men turned a crank.  However, things didn’t go so well when we fired from our submarine.  The Hunley sank.  The crew was trapped inside, and all of us died inside.  Do you think you would survive if this happened today?

The Life of the Civil War - The soldiers played cards and baseball to passed the time. When they traveled from camp to camp, they have to carry there own stuff. I am Richard Kirkland and I was the last man who survived a battle, and some soldiers needed my help. So I was a hero.
The Civil War was a very bloody battle where many soldiers died during it. I, Richard Kirkland, was a hero because of my courage. Do you think you would have been a hero if you had been in the Civil War?

The Hurley is a submarine which is a boat  that can travel underwater. People hoped the Hurley could help end the blockade. To make it work, one man guided the ship and others turned the crank. The Hurley sank ed our mission, but we ended up sinking just like the others did.  Would the Charleston Harbor twice during trial runs. Both times,  all of the men inside died.  The Hurley had to be raised from the water. Soon, it was time for the Hurley to battle the blockade with a  bomb attached. , The submarine sneaked close to a Union ship.  We were really scared because so many men had already died trying to do this same mission.  We fired a bomb at the blockade ship and completed you ever be brave enough to fire on a ship? Comment on the question when you see my post.

Life of a Civil War Soldier

I am a soldier. When a Confederate colonel tried to take me (Johnny Clem). I  picked up a musket and killed the colonel. I was made a sergeant. The Union rules stated a soldier was supposed to be at least 18 years old. Boys who were eager to fight found a way around that.  Fighting  and being a Civil War soldier was harder than ever. Fighting in battles was hard, but soldiers did not fight all the time. We spent our time in between battles walking around to set up new camps.  We walked so much that our feet were sore, peeling like onions, and sometimes even broken. Soldiers spent most of their time in camp. We did drills and learned how to march. Some soldiers played cards in their spare time. I played games like baseball. Many soldiers played musical instruments, like fiddles or flutes. I missed home. At least I got to write letters to my family and friends.  Almost every able white man in South Carolina fought in the war. More than 60,000 men from our state joined the cause of the Confederates. Some of them volunteered to fight. Others were drafted by the government. Drafted soldiers were forced to join the war. Soldiers found different ways to entertain themselves in camp. They hunted, read books and played cards. Some soldiers would even chase rabbits.  If you were a Civil War Soldier, how would you feel?

Do you know who Robert Smalls is and what I did?
I am Robert Smalls I am a gunboat pilot. My owner rented me a captain to teach me important things about sailing ships. At night time, when my captain was away, I sailed the Planter away from land. My plan was to sail out of the Charleston Harbor to get my freedom. My wife, kids, and the black crew members were with me on the trip. It was not easy escaping because I had to pass by guns at the Confederate forts.  It was so scary, but I tricked them to think I was a real captain. When I passed Fort Sumter, I directed the ship toward the Union ships. I sailed to the edge of the Harbor ,I lowered  the Confederate flag, and raised a white flag. That meant I am surrendering the gunboat to the Union. I am so happy that I have led my family to freedom. Would you go out in the night to go put the flag up? Why or why not???

Do you know what the blockade of Charleston is?
The blockade of Charleston is when boats blocked Charleston so they could not escape. This is scary how are we supposed  to escape. The boys are protecting us but it is still scary. Our dresses are ripped and dirty. Civilian goods were shipped into the confederate states on vessels known as blockade runners. Oh I forgot to tell you my name my name is Caroline randle. It is so hard not able to get food and tea. I miss having tea parties  and  our cookies. I don’t  like being blockaded. It is not fair! We need our supplies like clothes and cloth and we can not get blankets to keep us warm in the winter. Would you like being blockaded and unable to get supplies and food?

    Firing on Fort Sumter

My sisters and I came down to Rainbow Row to watch.  We so hope the southern troops are going to capture Fort Sumter. We didn't know what to expect.  Lots of friends were there. Everyone was dressed like they were going to a garden party. We cheered every time the cannons blasted!  It was very exciting.  I don't think the ladies realized this was the beginning of a war and not a show put on for their benefit. After all, some of our boys might be killed!

    Cordially,
    Miss Amanda Honeydew
